What is Chiropractic?

Since its inception nearly 110 years ago, modern day chiropractic care has paved the way for ‘alternative medicine’. When Daniel David (DD) Palmer gave that first ‘adjustment’ to patient Harvey Lillard he had no idea that Chiropractic become the most recognized form of alternative health care in the world.

What is Chiropractic

Garland chiropractor performing treatmentAt the center of Chiropractic care is the belief, based on scientific fact, that minor misalignments of the spine can cause pain, suffering and disease. When the vertebrae of the spine are out of alignment they press on the delicate spinal nerves. The brain, the spinal cord and these nerves, together form the single most important system in the human body; the nervous system.

At the center of the nervous system is the brain, which controls every aspect of our bodies and our lives. The spinal nerves that connect the brain to the body are like electrical cables along which the brain’s information and instructions flow. As you might imagine, cutting off this flow of information and instruction would be extremely detrimental to your health.

Unfortunately this is exactly what happens when the vertebrae of the spine are out of alignment. The misaligned spinal bones can apply pressure on the nerves, (the electric cables), and cut off the flow of information between the brain and the body. Without this information the body will slowly begin to break down and die, like a plant that slowly gets less and less water.

This powerful connection between the nervous system, the spine, and one’s overall health is what Dr. Palmer discovered when he treated Harvey Lillard in the early 1900’s.

An amazing recovery leads to a safe non-invasive treatment

Harvey Lillard suffered from deafness when Dr. Palmer surmised that one of the bones in his neck (a cervical vertebra) was out of place. When Dr. Palmer adjusted the bones in Mr. Lillard’s neck, the man almost immediately was able to hear again. After several more adjustments over subsequent days his hearing returned to near normal.

In those early days, Dr. Palmer realized that many other people also suffered as Mr. Lillard had, due to spinal misalignments in various parts of the body. This included the neck (cervical), through which pass the nerves that connect the brain to the head, shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. The mid back (thoracic), whose nerves control the major organs like the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys, and the lower back (lumbar) from where the nerves emerge that connect the sexual organs and lower extremities.

Vertebral misalignments at any of these levels can have devastating effects on a person’s health. Recognizing this, Dr. Palmer made it his mission in life to teach others the chiropractic techniques he had developed. He started the first Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa with just a handful of students in attendance.

Today Chiropractic Medicine has earned recognition and acceptance world-wide based on sound science, and its effectiveness. There are over 50,000 chiropractors in the U.S. alone and it is estimated that over 30 million people visit a chiropractor each year.
