Garland Chiropractor shares 4 Cornerstones To Better Health

With our busy schedules, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be very difficult. But just adopting small changes, will have a positive affect on your health. In the paragraphs below I will outline several cornerstones of good health and show you how a few easy choices can make a big difference.

Cornerstone #1: Nutrition and Vitamin Supplements

We all know that good quality food is vital to a healthy body. But with busy schedules, it can be difficult to get the nutrition we need. When faced with a time crunch, many people will grab a quick snack from an office vending machine or a pre-made sandwich from the local convenience store. Often these foods are less nutritious than those you can make at home, and usually contain added chemicals and preservatives.

image of healthy vegetablesCombat this tendency by making a conscious effort to improve your diet.Try to include more vegetables, fruits and nuts. Stick with whole grains over processed ones. For example, you might try eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, instead of a slice of toast. Opt for brown rice instead of white rice with your next Chinese meal, and begin to explore less familiar grains like quinoa, and barley. High sugar intake has been linked with a wide array of problems including increased inflammation within the body — so try to reduce sweets (even hidden ones like high fructose corn syrup).

Make any changes gradually, so that you aren’t overwhelmed.

As a Garland Chiropractor, I also recommend taking a high quality multivitamin every day. Few Americans actually eat the recommended daily 5 servings of fruits and vegetables — so a good multivitamin can help you fill the gap and avoid vitamin deficiencies.

Skip the discount store vitamins

Although it may be tempting to head down to your local discount store or supermarket to save money on your vitamins, you may want to rethink the strategy. Studies have shown that many of the most popular over the counter brands of vitamins have received poor ratings. That’s why we stock two of the best rated vitamins at Texas Spinal Health. Shaklee and Douglas Labs, are two high quality brands that consistently deliver excellent value and results.

Depending upon your individual health profile other nutritional supplements might be also be recommended. Supplements can help you deal with the effects of stress, aid hormone balance and lower inflammation. I am always available to offer advice to my Garland Chiropractic patients.

Cornerstone #2: Exercise

There are many reason to begin adding exercise to your daily routine. First and foremost, it is strongly linked to better health. You can keep your heart in top shape, your bones stronger and lower bad cholesterol — all by incorporating exercise into your day. Try to exercise 3-5 times a week. To succeed, try to find a form of exercise that you like. For some people that will be walking for others it might be yoga, or weight training.

Having treated thousands of patients as a Garland Chiropractor, I have seen the profound affect even a small amount amounts of exercise can have on the body. In many cases it has helped my patients reduce chronic neck pain, back pain and hip pain.

Cornerstone #3: Restful Sleep and Stress Management

Long term stress can severely impact your health. It can affect your sleep, and lead to irritability and depression. Fortunately, following the guidelines we listed above for better nutrition and exercise will help you manage your stress. But if you need more assistance, consider adding a safe nutritional supplement to your diet, like Shaklee’s Stress Relief complex or Douglas Labs’ Gaba. You can also add deep breathing exercises and meditation.

To assist you in getting a better night’s sleep, avoid ingesting caffeine after 3:00 pm and establish regular bedtime hours. Take a few minutes to wind down at the end of the day. You may enjoy taking a relaxing hot bath, reading a good book or listing to soft music.

Cornerstone #4: Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic Treatment offers many long term benefits for our patients in Garland. Chiropractors perform simple “adjustments” that bring the spine and joints into alignment. This allows the body to begin to heal itself. Many people respond quickly, experiencing a quick reduction in pain. Also, when the spine is properly aligned, the nervous system can communicate more effectively. This improved communication can enhance your body’s response. Some of our patient have seem improvement in conditions like allergies, asthmas, fibromyalgia, and migraines.

Our Garland Chiropractor Helps With Natural Joint Pain Relief

It can be tough to get up in the morning when your joints creak and ache and you feel 10 to 15 years older than your actual age. As a Garland chiropractor, I work to help people get natural joint pain relief.

What is joint pain?

Joint pain is pain caused by injury or disease which damages the joint. A person’s joints connect their bones and help to provide mobility and support for walking, running and other movements. Unfortunately joints are susceptible to damage from accidents or diseases which may affect the bone. When the joint is damaged it can cause inflammation leading to joint pain.

What causes joint pain?

a woman who need natural joint pain reliefThe most common types of joint pain are caused by sprains, arthritis, and gout, and other injuries of the joint or bone. Jobs that involve repetitive movements can also be a factor as they may cause wear and tear on the joints. Even exercising improperly can injure a joint.

When the joint is injured, it tends to become inflamed. Joint pain can effect just about any part of the body, including ankles, wrists, elbows, knees and shoulders and can occur in people of all ages.

Joint pain ranges from minor pain to incredibly intense pain and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks or even months or years.

What is the best joint pain treatment?

There are several different treatments aimed at relieving joint pain, and the best method for you will depend on the duration and sevearity of your joint pain.

The most common way of treating joint pain is to suppress symptoms through medication or even steroid injections. However these treatments generally only offer temporary relief.

As a Garland chiropractor, I believe there are much better methods. A chiropractor will treat the underlying cause of joint pain by correcting minor joint misalignments and helping to restore range of motion and increase mobility. This treatment alone can brings many people dramatic pain relief.

Advanced treatments options help to speed healing

Our chiropractic office also offers additional advanced treatments like laser therapy and therapeutic massage. Our 10 watt hot laser therapy helps improve blood circulation in the affected area and reduces inflammation. This FDA cleared treatment is completely safe and painless.

Massage therapy works as a complement to chiropractic treatment. Besides being a wonderful, relaxing experience, many patient notice improved range of motion almost immediately.

The Three Phases of Chiropractic Care – Texas Spinal Health

Many patients have asked me the same question over the years: ‘Doc, how long does it take to heal?’ It’s a good question, but it differs so much from one patient to the next that it’s challenging to give a standard answer. The fact is, we all heal at different rates and speeds.

However, with that in mind, I decided to put together a little information about the 3 Phases of Chiropractic care, which I believe can shed light on the question of how long it takes to heal.

Phase 1 – The Relief Phase.

This is the first step to regaining your health and your life. When most people arrive at the Texas Spinal Health office they are suffering from the effects of accidents, falls, injuries, stress and bad posture that they’ve endured over many years. This Relief Phase is designed to quickly reduce their pain and discomfort.image of Garland chiropractor and patient

During this phase, a patient sometimes comes in two or three times over the course of a week. Scheduling appointments close together helps to reduce the pain and starts putting the spinal bones back in their proper position.

During Phase 1 a patient needs plenty of rest, lots of water, and, most importantly, a positive attitude.

Phase 2 – The Correction Phase.

During Phase 2 we focus on the spinal deviations that are causing pain, the vertebral misalignments. During this phase as your Garland chiropractor, I may choose to diversify the type of chiropractic adjustments you receive. The correction phase is much more important than the relief phase as it is designed to put the structures of the spine into correct position and bring the benefits of long-term health. It will also continue to provide pain relief.

Phase 3 – The Maintenance Phase.

Once you have come to Phase 3 you will be feeling much, much better and may not have any more outward symptoms. Your pain is reduced or has gone away completely, the swelling and discomfort is probably gone, and you’re feeling like your ‘old self’ again.

Keep in mind, however, the spinal misalignments, can always come back if you start to fall back into old habits.

The purpose of the maintenance phase is just that, to maintain the excellent results we have achieved and keep your spine healthy for the future. Based upon your unique situation, and my experience as a Garland Chiropractor, I will recommend future visits to maintain the health of your spine.

This is one of the most important phases, because if done correctly, it can mean a lifetime of good health and much less pain. Like your regular Dental checkups maintaining your spine is an important part of staying healthy and preventing future problems. Remember, an absence of symptoms does not always mean an absence of problems. One of the most important things you can do for your health is to maintain your spine, and the best place to do that is right here at Texas Spinal Health.

This is a brief explanation of how chiropractic treatment works best. Although the timeline may vary, if you follow the advice I’ve offered and have a little patience, your results should be the same.

So take a tip from your Garland chiropractor and schedule an appointment at Texas Spinal Health today. We’ll get you back on track as quickly as possible.

Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Thoracic Kyphosis?

The other day I as I was walking into my office, I watched an elderly person slowly make his way down the hall. His “hunched” back forced his head forward, his eyes aimed toward the ground.

image of a man with thoracic kyphosisThis curvature of the upper spine is known as thoracic kyphosis. It is also sometimes called “round-back”. The gentlemen I saw walking down the hallway was an extreme case. Most of the time kyphosis is more mild – and less apparent. It frequently appears in middle aged women. You may have heard it called a Dowager’s Hump. Although kyphosis is related to spinal scoliosis, it has its own distinguishing characteristics and risk factors.

Causes of thoracic kyphosis

Beyond certain rare cases of thoracic kyphosis that occur at birth or in the adolescent years, there are many factors that can contribute to kyphosis. Here are just a few:

  • Improper posture
  • Traumatic injury to the spine
  • Arthritis
  • Disc degeneration
  • Osteoporosis
  • Slipped vertebra
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Spina bifida

Symptoms of Kyphosis

The symptoms of kyphosis can range from mild back pain, and tenderness in the spine to fatigue, stiffness and difficulty breathing.

The most common traditional medical approach to treating kyphosis involves body braces. But braces are cumbersome, do not work perfectly, and are generally impractical for a normal life. In more severe cases, the MD may recommend spinal fusion surgery. But as is the case with any invasive procedure such as surgery, there is always the potential for complications.

Let’s look at a few safe, alternative medicine treatments for thoracic kyphosis…

Chiropractic treatment for Kyphosis

As your Garland chiropractor, first I will find the cause of your particular kyphosis. As mentioned previously, some cases of kyphosis are congenital, or due to trauma or disease. But the most common cause of thoracic kyphosis is improper posture, such as slouching.

During your exam I can identify the areas that show abnormal motion. I will then work to gently realign any out of place spinal vertebrae. Over time these “adjustments” will help the body function better. Correcting these spinal and muscular imbalances can help lessen kyphosis.

Nutritional Support

In addition to chiropractic treatment, nutritional supplements can play an important role in reducing inflammation and pain, while giving your body the nutrients it needs to repair and restore itself. Our innovative nutrition programs use whole food supplements based on solid science and years of testing.
