Have you ever experienced an excruciating pain that shoots down the buttocks and the back of the leg? This incredible pain can make standing or walking extremely difficult.
If you recognize these symptoms, you may have experienced sciatica.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerves become irritated and inflamed. The Sciatic nerves are located at the top of the lower spine and continue down the buttocks to the back of the legs and into the feet. Typical symptoms of sciatica range from a mild tingling or burning sensation to a shooting pain that travels from the lower back, through the buttocks and back of the legs. The pain may also travel to the feet. Often sciatic pain only occurs on one side of the body, however it can affect both legs.
Sciatica can be very frightening – particularly if you don’t understand the cause of the pain.
Our Garland chiropractor explains the causes of sciatica
Sciatica may show up if the nerves in the low back are pinched or if there is a disc problem. The disc may have a bulge or the nerves may have become pinched. For some people, arthritis or a sprained ligament will narrow the nerve passageways causing the the nerve endings to grow tender and inflamed. Other rare causes of sciatica include a blood clot or a growth.
Treatment of Sciatica
Since sciatic nerve pain is caused by a combination of inflammation and pressure on the nerves, treatment must address these factors. Fortunately, in many cases, Garland chiropractor, Dr. Mixon, can treat sciatica successfully without the need for surgery.
Non-surgical sciatica treatment offers many advantages. It may include a combination of medical treatments like chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression and laser therapy. As a part of your treatment program, your Garland chiropractor will ask you to do a few strengthening exercises and basic stretches. Regular excercise will strengthen the spine’s supporting muscles and will help to prevent reinjury.
You may also want to consider taking advantage of massage therapy. Garland, Texas residents may discover that massage therapy combined with chiropractic treatment can help the spine stay in alignment for a greater period of time.
Don’t make these common mistakes
Don’t apply heat or heating pads to the problem area while the nerve is inflamed. Heat applied to an injury can increase swelling and inflammation. A better choice is to apply ice packs to directly to the lower back. Our Garland chiropractor recommends using an ice pack on the lower back for twenty minues at a time every two hours. Although this may feel strange, the cold packs will help reduce swelling.
If you wish to avoid prescription pain killers and muslcle relaxants, there are alternative analgesics. Many people trust homeopathic remedies like Traumeel or Zeel. These two products are clinically proven to reduce pain and are available in either tablets or topical creams and are in stock at Dr. Mixon’s office.
Many people have successfully overcome sciatica with Dr. Mixon’s help. As a Garland chirpractor, Dr. Mixon has treated hundreds of patients and his treatment programs are safe, gentle and effective.
