image representing alternative medicine in garland txPeople all over the world use these therapies not only to treat many common health problems, but also to achieve a higher state of health and balance. We’ll address 4 of the most popular therapies in the article below.

For thousands of years, the treatments now deemed alternative, were standard practice. In today’s world, more people are turning to these optional therapies when they are in a health crisis, or when they haven’t found help through traditional medicine.

Chiropractic medicine – Safe, gentle and proven effective

Chiropractic medicine is a form of medicine relied upon by many people who suffer from joint and back pain. In chiropractic medicine, a doctor makes minor adjustments to the spine. These treatments are safe and gentle, and serve to correct minor misalignments. When these misalignments are corrected, the spine and nerves can communicate more effectively.

Some chiropractors, like Dr. James Mixon in Garland Texas, provide chiropractic treatment in an integrated medical setting. In Dr Mixon’s chiropractic clinic, alternative therapies such as chiropractic care, therapeutic massage, laser therapy, spinal decompression and nutritional medicine are offered along side more traditional options such as physical rehab.

The services of an MD and Nurse Practitioner are also available, allowing patients to choose more traditional options when necessary. Combining these services allow his staff to deliver the most up-to-date and scientifically sound treatment protocols.

Vitamins and supplements as medicine

For the ever increasing groups of people who prefer the natural effects of alternative medicines and therapies over synthetic drugs when they are looking to cure or prevent illness, nutritional medicine may be any ideal choice.

Nutritional Medicine is a term used to identify treatments that center around vitamins and herbal supplements. With nutritional medicine, the goal is to address the root cause of the illness. This differs from pharmaceutical or allopathic medicine, where often medications treat only the symptoms.

Additionally herbal medications and natural vitamin supplements have the benefit of being completely organic, or from the earth, and deliver results that often compare favorably to prescription drugs.

Practitioners of nutritional medicine has found that common nutrition deficiencies can lead to a host of diseases and health conditions. In many cases, correcting the deficiencies with a balanced diet and vitamin supplements and herbs, can correct or reduce many health conditions.

Two ancient practices that treat modern day problems

Meditation is another form of alternative medicine that has become an integral part of many people’s daily lives. With roots steeped in ancient spiritual tradition, meditation provides a release for stress and anxiety while helping a person retain strength and mobility.

Similarly, acupuncture, with its roots based in traditional Chinese Medicine has been in practice for over 2000 years,. With Acupuncture, the goal is to correct imbalances in the life force, which the Chinese call “qi”. This is done by precise insertion of very thin needles into acupuncture points that are connected by channels called meridians. In theory these needles stimulate these acupuncture points to help make the corrections.

Many people claim that acupuncture treatments can significantly reduce joint pain. control headaches, and diffuse anxiety,.

Alternative medicine provides a viable option to traditional medicine which helps people face everyday challenges while maintaining their well-being. If you’re looking for a new way to treat a health problem or deal with stress or anxiety, consider one of the options listed above.

Garland Chiropractor shares 4 Cornerstones To Better Health

With our busy schedules, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be very difficult. But just adopting small changes, will have a positive affect on your health. In the paragraphs below I will outline several cornerstones of good health and show you how a few easy choices can make a big difference.

Cornerstone #1: Nutrition and Vitamin Supplements

We all know that good quality food is vital to a healthy body. But with busy schedules, it can be difficult to get the nutrition we need. When faced with a time crunch, many people will grab a quick snack from an office vending machine or a pre-made sandwich from the local convenience store. Often these foods are less nutritious than those you can make at home, and usually contain added chemicals and preservatives.

image of healthy vegetablesCombat this tendency by making a conscious effort to improve your diet.Try to include more vegetables, fruits and nuts. Stick with whole grains over processed ones. For example, you might try eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, instead of a slice of toast. Opt for brown rice instead of white rice with your next Chinese meal, and begin to explore less familiar grains like quinoa, and barley. High sugar intake has been linked with a wide array of problems including increased inflammation within the body — so try to reduce sweets (even hidden ones like high fructose corn syrup).

Make any changes gradually, so that you aren’t overwhelmed.

As a Garland Chiropractor, I also recommend taking a high quality multivitamin every day. Few Americans actually eat the recommended daily 5 servings of fruits and vegetables — so a good multivitamin can help you fill the gap and avoid vitamin deficiencies.

Skip the discount store vitamins

Although it may be tempting to head down to your local discount store or supermarket to save money on your vitamins, you may want to rethink the strategy. Studies have shown that many of the most popular over the counter brands of vitamins have received poor ratings. That’s why we stock two of the best rated vitamins at Texas Spinal Health. Shaklee and Douglas Labs, are two high quality brands that consistently deliver excellent value and results.

Depending upon your individual health profile other nutritional supplements might be also be recommended. Supplements can help you deal with the effects of stress, aid hormone balance and lower inflammation. I am always available to offer advice to my Garland Chiropractic patients.

Cornerstone #2: Exercise

There are many reason to begin adding exercise to your daily routine. First and foremost, it is strongly linked to better health. You can keep your heart in top shape, your bones stronger and lower bad cholesterol — all by incorporating exercise into your day. Try to exercise 3-5 times a week. To succeed, try to find a form of exercise that you like. For some people that will be walking for others it might be yoga, or weight training.

Having treated thousands of patients as a Garland Chiropractor, I have seen the profound affect even a small amount amounts of exercise can have on the body. In many cases it has helped my patients reduce chronic neck pain, back pain and hip pain.

Cornerstone #3: Restful Sleep and Stress Management

Long term stress can severely impact your health. It can affect your sleep, and lead to irritability and depression. Fortunately, following the guidelines we listed above for better nutrition and exercise will help you manage your stress. But if you need more assistance, consider adding a safe nutritional supplement to your diet, like Shaklee’s Stress Relief complex or Douglas Labs’ Gaba. You can also add deep breathing exercises and meditation.

To assist you in getting a better night’s sleep, avoid ingesting caffeine after 3:00 pm and establish regular bedtime hours. Take a few minutes to wind down at the end of the day. You may enjoy taking a relaxing hot bath, reading a good book or listing to soft music.

Cornerstone #4: Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic Treatment offers many long term benefits for our patients in Garland. Chiropractors perform simple “adjustments” that bring the spine and joints into alignment. This allows the body to begin to heal itself. Many people respond quickly, experiencing a quick reduction in pain. Also, when the spine is properly aligned, the nervous system can communicate more effectively. This improved communication can enhance your body’s response. Some of our patient have seem improvement in conditions like allergies, asthmas, fibromyalgia, and migraines.

Garland Chiropractor | Drop the Excuses and Start Exercising!

Who has time to exercise when there are only 24 hours in the day?

image of woman exercisingAs a Garland chiropractor, lack of time is the number one excuse my patients offer for not exercising. Every day busy work schedules, errands and family obligations all vie for our attention. So it’s easy to understand why so many people push exercise aside in favor of other priorities.

But when you consider all the health benefits that are linked to exercise, it’s one thing worth making time for.

According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise can:

  • Help control weight
  • Boost energy
  • Ward off diseases
  • Improve mood
  • Help you sleep better
  • Enhance your sex life

I encourage you to set an exercise goal and book the time on your weekly calendars. It will make a difference to your health!

When you have a full schedule it’s easy to find a reason not to exercise. You may be exhausted, overwhelmed and don’t feel like you can find the time. You’d probably rather head straight home, where you can make a beeline for the sofa and remote control.

But try to resist the temptation. Instead throw on your walking shoes and head out the door. If you take a brisk walk, you’ll be rewarded by lower stress levels and improved stamina. In addition, exercise can help back pain sufferers. You may find that regular exercise you may help you save a trip or two to the chiropractor! Garland residents can take advantage of many of the Dallas area’s walking trails and parks to enjoy low impact exercise in a scenic environment.

Exercise is recommended for your back health

As a Garland chiropractor, I often recommend regular exercise for my patients. When you don’t exercise, the muscles weaken and you become more susceptible to injury.

Every day I see the toll that sedentary lifestyles take on peoples body’s. Many of the aches and pains that I treat every day could be prevented by regular workouts. Strengthening exercises will help you get through your daily activities, while avoiding strains or sprains.

Beyond the health benefits to your back, exercise will sharpen your thinking and help you feel revitalized. You’ll find that exercise pays off in a mind and body that function together harmoniously,

So take a tip from your Garland Chiropractor — make your health a top priority. Carve our a niche of time, drop the excuses and start exercising!

Why Your Child Could Benefit From a Trip to Your Garland Chiropractor

As a Garland chiropractor, I talk to many new patients who have never been to a chiropractor before and often have no idea what chiropractic is all about. I do my best to educate them about what I do, how it works, and the benefits that chiropractic can have not just to help ‘pain’ but to help a person live a healthier life.

Most people only see me for their own health concerns, but the truth is, chiropractic treatment is beneficial for the entire family.

an image of happy childrenTaking care of the spine is every bit as important as taking care of your teeth and your eyes. Just as children benefit from routine check ups with the dentist or ophthalmologist, they can also benefit from occasional visits to their chiropractor.

At this time, very few parents consider scheduling regular chiropractic check-ups for their children, like they would the dentist or ophthalmologist. However the need for chiropractic care for children is very clear. Childhood is full of small traumatic incidents, like falls from a bicycle, which over time can have a grave effect on the spine. Like a build-up of plaque on the teeth the small traumas build and can produce a myriad of health problems down the line.

Even without trauma there are problems that Chiropractic can help. Not long ago I encountered a young child who was having trouble with bed-wetting. After a full spinal exam I realized that the youngster had several minor spinal misalignments. I gently corrected the problem over a period of a few weeks. Within days her bed-wetting problem stopped completely.

Chronic ear infections, scoliosis, headaches and other health problems plague children as well as adults. Children also have an added advantage over adults – they respond better and faster to chiropractic. They’re bodies are like healing dynamos and, with the proper spinal alignment and nervous system function, they heal incredibly fast.

With chiropractic care your child will develop and grow normally and the bumps and bruises that could come back to haunt them later in life are avoided. Scoliosis, if detected in childhood, can be cured in a vast majority of the cases with proper and ongoing chiropractic care.

A trip to the Garland chiropractor will ensure your child’s spine is free of misalignments and leave them free to grow and develop normally.

Someday, when they’re older, they’ll give you a great big hug and say ‘thanks’.

The Three Phases of Chiropractic Care – Texas Spinal Health

Many patients have asked me the same question over the years: ‘Doc, how long does it take to heal?’ It’s a good question, but it differs so much from one patient to the next that it’s challenging to give a standard answer. The fact is, we all heal at different rates and speeds.

However, with that in mind, I decided to put together a little information about the 3 Phases of Chiropractic care, which I believe can shed light on the question of how long it takes to heal.

Phase 1 – The Relief Phase.

This is the first step to regaining your health and your life. When most people arrive at the Texas Spinal Health office they are suffering from the effects of accidents, falls, injuries, stress and bad posture that they’ve endured over many years. This Relief Phase is designed to quickly reduce their pain and discomfort.image of Garland chiropractor and patient

During this phase, a patient sometimes comes in two or three times over the course of a week. Scheduling appointments close together helps to reduce the pain and starts putting the spinal bones back in their proper position.

During Phase 1 a patient needs plenty of rest, lots of water, and, most importantly, a positive attitude.

Phase 2 – The Correction Phase.

During Phase 2 we focus on the spinal deviations that are causing pain, the vertebral misalignments. During this phase as your Garland chiropractor, I may choose to diversify the type of chiropractic adjustments you receive. The correction phase is much more important than the relief phase as it is designed to put the structures of the spine into correct position and bring the benefits of long-term health. It will also continue to provide pain relief.

Phase 3 – The Maintenance Phase.

Once you have come to Phase 3 you will be feeling much, much better and may not have any more outward symptoms. Your pain is reduced or has gone away completely, the swelling and discomfort is probably gone, and you’re feeling like your ‘old self’ again.

Keep in mind, however, the spinal misalignments, can always come back if you start to fall back into old habits.

The purpose of the maintenance phase is just that, to maintain the excellent results we have achieved and keep your spine healthy for the future. Based upon your unique situation, and my experience as a Garland Chiropractor, I will recommend future visits to maintain the health of your spine.

This is one of the most important phases, because if done correctly, it can mean a lifetime of good health and much less pain. Like your regular Dental checkups maintaining your spine is an important part of staying healthy and preventing future problems. Remember, an absence of symptoms does not always mean an absence of problems. One of the most important things you can do for your health is to maintain your spine, and the best place to do that is right here at Texas Spinal Health.

This is a brief explanation of how chiropractic treatment works best. Although the timeline may vary, if you follow the advice I’ve offered and have a little patience, your results should be the same.

So take a tip from your Garland chiropractor and schedule an appointment at Texas Spinal Health today. We’ll get you back on track as quickly as possible.
